Computer A/V Distilled

I’ve had a continuing interest in audio/video implementations in computer-as-source setups for a number of years. While simply getting things to play is not particularly difficult, optimizing for performance and quality requires some research. In preparation for a move to Vista and a completely new machine build within the next six months, I’ve been poking around for the most recent A/V information; I’ve compiled a portion of that research here along with some basic information. The takeaway here is to use ASIO, Media Player Classic Home Cinema and/or ffdshow-tryouts. Those who have been out of the loop should especially look into MPC-HC and ffdshow-tryouts, which are continuations of the well-loved originals, MPC and ffdshow.
